The semilab is designed to provide a brief introduction to computational modeling of "complex systems," both biological and non-biological, that cannot be captured either conceptually or mathematically using statistical analyses. What do processes like regulation of brain and gene circuits, generation of language variants, stock market crashes, and physical phase transitions all have in common? They all involve complex systems, in which dynamics are fundamentally nonlinear and in which small changes in initial conditions can show surprisingly counter-intuitive emergent effects.
