"Mitochondria are the powerhouse of a cell" – we all know this notorious expression from school, but what does it actually mean? In this semilab, we will uncover the mysteries of bioenergetics, find out how mitochondria produce energy, and understand why we use oxygen to respire. It will be a hands-on practical experience where you will try to inhibit mitochondria from producing energy using various poisons. We will learn why this is possible for mammalian mitochondria but not for mitochondria containing synthetic respiratory chain with enzymes from invertebrates. Prior knowledge of biochemistry or general biology is preferable. Preparatory Zoom session will be held shortly before Sigma camp to introduce some general concepts and give out reading materials in preparation for the practical part.
