Have you ever wondered how chemists determine the structure of the substances they create or study? Typically, they utilize various spectroscopic techniques. In our class, we will explore different experimental methods, including optical spectroscopy (which measures the emission or absorption of light by atoms and molecules), infrared and UV spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry. We will also cover fluorescence and indicator dyes, along with their various applications. To gain insight into how scientists worked in previous centuries—when they had to create everything themselves, including glassware and chemicals—we will attempt to replicate their methods and synthesize the chemicals they used from scratch.
