This semilab will be unlocking the mysteries of the solid state physics. From exploring the electronic structure of atoms forming solids to understanding the energy band structure and its profound impact on electrical conductivity, campers will immerse themselves in fundamental principles that shape the modern technological landscape.
Throughout the week, we will engage in hands-on experiments and theoretical explorations. You will be transforming regular sand into silicon - one of the most abundantly available elements on Earth. We will measure the solar cell efficiency under Sigma camp sun, fabricate integrated circuits with transistors including amplifiers, digital logic gates and memory cells. We will be discussing white spots in the solid state theory arising with reduction of transistor dimensions in integrated circuits and novel quantum phenomena. And projecting future opportunities for the young scientists to apply their creativity.
