SigmaCamp 2025: QQ Submission

SigmaCamp Qualification Quiz (QQ) consists of 12 problems. All students applying for SigmaCamp must attempt to solve them and submit their solutions (except for winners of the Problem of the Month contest - see below)

The quiz consists of problems in Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Linguistics - two problems in each discipline. The problems vary in difficulty, and you are not expected to solve all of them. Do as many problems as you can (this will, of course, increase your chances of getting accepted), but even if you solve just one problem, please send us your answer anyway. When evaluating QQ solutions, we consider your age and the amount of effort and thought that your put into tackling the problems. In scientific research, persistence and creative and analytical thought are essential and we will look for that in submissions. That is, show your thought process!

(NEW) QQ Office Hours

To support applicants during the Qualification Quiz (QQ) portion of the SigmaCamp application, we are offering Office Hours where students can receive one-on-one guidance from our staff. These sessions are designed to help applicants get unstuck and move in the right direction - without giving away answers. Learn more about it here

The deadline for submitting Qualification Quiz (QQ) solutions is April 15, 2025 11:59 PM EDT

Who does not need to take the QQ?

  • If you were accepted to SigmaCamp through the Problem of the Month contest (POM), you do not need to submit the QQ.
  • If you participated in POM, but were not admitted among the top scorers, your effort will not be forgotten: 35% of your total POM score will be added to your QQ score.

How to prepare and submit your solution

Please use this page to submit your solutions to the Qualification Quiz (QQ) 2025. In order to submit your solutions, you must be logged in to your account.

Solutions for different problems should be uploaded as separate files.

We encourage you to type up your answers, but some of the problems require math or chemical formulas, so you may want to handwrite your solutions. Handwritten solutions should be scanned (please save the scans in PDF format; if using your phone to take photo, use an app such as Cam Scanner).

If handwriting solutions, please make sure that your work is easy to read, as a courtesy to the graders. Please leave wide margins. Use a dark pencil or black pen, and cross out instead of making smudgy erasures. If you submit a solution that does not follow those general guidelines, we may ask you to resubmit.

For all subjects other than Computer Science, allowed file types are PDF. For Computer Science, files should have extension .java for Java solutions and .py for Python. (You might get a security warning that your .py file was renamed to .py.txt; this is normal - do not worry about it.)

You can use the Internet, books and even help from someone (who is not another applicant), but state precisely what sources you have used to solve each problem. Note that you cannot post the problems to the Internet or other public forums and solicit help that way. You are also not allowed to use any LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, etc.) to solve any of the problems.
