By now, we are at the midpoint of camp, and it is in full swing. Campers are getting into more advanced topics in their semilabs, be it different kinds of infinities in mathematics or measuring the width of human hair using diffraction patterns in optics.
Today's lecture series covered an equally wide range of fascinating topics. Campers learned about entropy (by our former counselor Alex Frenkel, who is now doing research on black holes at Simons Institute for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook University), explored the surprisingly complex world of plant genetics, and discovered the elegant mathematics behind secure communication in the lecture on Zero-Knowledge Proofs. As in previous days, many students continued their conversations with the speakers during our "Dinner with Lecturers" program, asking questions that ranged well beyond the lecture material.
The SigmaTournament also continued today, with another exciting round of collaborative problem solving. Today’s subject was Math Games, where teams played games that are disguised as fun, engaging games with tons of math theory behind them. The winning strategy involved modular arithmetic and binary numbers, and some teams did very well! Every round reshuffles the leaderboard, so the competition remains close as we head into the second half of camp.
As always, Sigma Break provided a welcome chance to recharge. Campers filled the game room, climbed the rock wall, swam in the pool, played chess matches for the ongoing tournament, or simply enjoyed spending time with new friends between the day's academic activities. These breaks have become one of the highlights of camp, giving everyone a chance to relax before diving back into science.
This evening's clubs offered something very special. We had the incredible Brain Ring, which asks complicated questions that have common-sense answers - but you are only given 1 minute to come up with your answer. Five teams of campers and staff competed against each other - and all of them had a lot of fun.
After team time, cookies, and plenty of stories to share with their cabins, campers headed to bed to rest up for another full day of discovery tomorrow. We can't wait to see what Day 4 has in store, including the long-awaited Talent Show!
