We are approaching the end of the camp! Only one day of semilabs left, so the campers are completing their projects.
The Sigma Tournament also has only one day left. Today was the engineering day; part of the challenge was launching a foam airplane as far as possible using the provided rubber bands. Some campers found very unorthodox solutions, launching the airplane about 9 meters - after they found that it flies much farther if one removes the wings. As of now, Team Zeta is leading the competition - but tomorrow is the Grand Unification day, when the tournament includes the problems from all subjects, and everything can change yet.
Campers again had two breaks during the day. They spent these breaks playing games in the game room, fine-tuning their musical instruments in preparation for the Talent Show, sliding down the zipline, and much more.
Today we had two guest lectures, both about biology. Ryo Higuchi-Sanabria gave an informative lecture about aging, and camper engagement was at an all-time high. Bassem Al-Sady told us about cell communication and cell fate, with very interactive slides and experiments.
As before, campers also had several workshops to choose from. One could learn to solve the Rubik’s cube or study planaria, extract DNA from a strawberry, or learn to bake bread (on fully scientific principles, with discussion of yeast and Lactobacillus bacteria).
And the final event of the day was a Talent show! Campers performed on piano and guitar, sang, and even tried a musical. And it was not only campers - a duet of our own staff, Alex and Andrey, rapped about science, or, rather, about Bad Scientists, to the great delight of the audience.
